Öncü And Montella Target Podium Finishes

The Kawasaki Puccetti Racing pairing of Can Öncü and Yari Montella will take on the challenge of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in a few days’ time, as the FIM Supersport World Championship heads south to Iberia once again.

Despite still being a teenager Öncü has started over 50 WorldSSP races, all for Kawasaki, and he has claimed five career podium finishes along the way.

Can has been on the podium twice already in 2022 and the ambitious Turkish rider aims to get there again in the two Barcelona-Catalunya races, which will be held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.

Despite being a rookie in this class in 2022 Montella has already come close to the podium steps, with fourth place finishes at Estoril and Donington. He was fifth in Race One at Magny Cours last time out.

The Italian’s next ambition is to make that important jump up to the top three positions in a points scoring race. There can be few better opportunities for him to achieve that aim than the forthcoming ones in Barcelona, as he had raced there before on a number of different types of machinery.

As things stand, Öncü is fourth in the championship rankings with 135 points. Montella is seventh in the table presently, with 92 points.

With the long summer break firmly coming to an end at the previous round in France in early September the WorldSSP championship is going through a relatively intense period of action from now until the end of the season in mid-November.

After the Catalunya weekend the ninth round of the championship will take place at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal, between 7-9 October.

Can Öncü, stated: “We were unlucky in France at the last round. On Saturday we came very close to the podium, while on Sunday I was hit by another rider and struggled to finish the race. We hope Barcelona goes a lot better. I really like the track and have always been fast here. I’ll be aiming for a podium that can repay all the work the team and I are doing.”

Yari Montella, stated: “I know the Barcelona track well and have raced here in different classes. Our goal is to continue to work on our bike, making the most of the experience we’ve gained at previous rounds, in order to aim for the podium. We’re also hoping for good weather!”

Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) is looking to continue the notable progress he has already made in his rookie WorldSSP season. He is currently eighth overall, just one place and 13 points behind his fellow Kawasaki rookie Montella.

Tom Booth-Amos (Prodina Racing Kawasaki) has scored points and also picked up injuries in his rookie WorldSSP year. He now aims to finish with a flourish and many more championship points to his name.

Ben Currie and Jeffrey Buis (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti Kawasaki) will aim to score points in Catalunya. Currie is already on the scoreboard thanks to his 15th place in Race Two at Estoril.
